Suggested layout

Start with 12 pt type, 1.3 line spacing and at least 0.625 in at the binding edge. Allow a separate page for each full-page image. Export a sample chapter, then adjust for headings, captions and chapter openings.

This estimate treats text and images as separate pages. For picture books with text over artwork, use a page-by-page storyboard instead of adding both counts. KDP prints on both sides; blank reverse pages are part of your file.

How we estimate page count

From words to a usable text area

This book page count calculator starts with the trim and subtracts working margins before estimating line length. It converts the remaining area into points, then uses the font size to approximate how many characters fit on a line. An average English word, including its following space, is modeled as 6 characters. The estimate leaves room for ordinary paragraph breaks rather than assuming every line is completely filled. These are editorial assumptions, not an Amazon formula. They make comparisons repeatable, but they cannot reproduce the exact width of a particular font, unusual punctuation or the layout decisions of your typesetting application.

Font size, line spacing and binding margins

A larger font uses more horizontal space and usually more vertical space. Increasing line spacing further reduces the number of lines on a page, even when the word count stays the same. The tool starts with 0.625 in planning margins and increases the inside margin when the estimated length crosses a KDP gutter threshold. It repeats the calculation until that margin and page estimate agree. This matters most for longer manuscripts: a thick book needs a wider binding allowance, which can push a few more words onto the next page. Choose readable settings for your audience before trying to minimize the total.

Pictures, blank reverses and front matter

Full-page illustrations are added separately from prose. You can optionally leave a blank reverse behind each one, but this is a layout choice, not a single-sided printing setting at Amazon. The file still contains both sides. We also reserve 4 pages for basic front matter and round the complete result up to an even number. Replace that allowance with your actual opening pages when you finish the interior. Chapter-opening pages, indexes and long contents lists are not individually modeled. For a picture book with text integrated into artwork, sketch the spreads first; its story rhythm is usually more important than words per page.

Words to pages conversion chart

Compare estimated words per page across six trims and four font sizes. The chart uses 1.3 line spacing, 0.625 in working margins, a short-book gutter and the same English-prose assumptions as the calculator. Larger books may need wider inside margins. These values describe text-only pages; they do not include the separate illustration or front-matter allocation.

How many pages is 50000 words?

Using the 6 × 9 in example with 12 pt type and 1.3 spacing gives about 192 pages, including the opening-page allowance. Try a smaller trim to see the estimated count rise, or larger type to see the readability tradeoff. Neither a thinner book nor a lower word count automatically makes a better product. Use the estimate to choose a workable format, then read a printed sample at its real physical size.

KDP minimum page requirements

KDP page count rules depend on the binding and interior. A short illustrated book that qualifies for premium color may be too short for standard color. Hardcover also uses a different minimum and a narrower set of trim options. The table below is a starting point; use the official page for your exact configuration and marketplace.

Turn a page estimate into a finished layout

Start with one typical chapter or a representative group of illustrated pages. Include the headings, captions and paragraph styles that will actually appear in the finished book. Export that section and compare its real page count with this estimate. If your chapter contains frequent short dialogue lines, the calculator may fit too much prose per page; if your text is unusually dense, the reverse may happen. Keep the reader’s experience ahead of a target number.

Once the manuscript is complete, check every blank reverse and chapter start, export the final interior PDF, and use that total in the KDP cover size calculator. For illustration-heavy projects, explore the AI picture book generator workflow, the AI coloring book generator workflow, and text to image illustration tools. The bleed and gutter guide explains which parts of the page must remain clear.

Count illustrated pages without counting them twice

Use the words-to-pages estimate for prose that occupies its own pages. If text shares a page with a full-page illustration, count that physical page once in your storyboard instead of adding a separate prose page. This calculator does not automatically flow text around pictures.

Planning example: 20 designs with 20 blank reverses and 4 opening pages make a 44-page interior. Without blank reverses, the same plan has 24 pages. These are layout examples, not generated books. Use the final exported PDF count when sizing the cover.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 50000 words?

With our default 12 pt font, 1.3 spacing, a 6 × 9 in trim and no full-page images, the estimate is 192 pages, including 4 front-matter pages. That is a planning answer, not a guarantee: different fonts, chapter openings, dialogue, headings and paragraph spacing all change the result. Enter your own settings above, then typeset a representative chapter to see whether the estimate matches your actual manuscript.

How many words per page should I assume?

There is no single words-per-page figure for every book. A smaller trim, larger font or wider line spacing reduces capacity. Dense continuous prose usually fits more words than a page of dialogue, poetry or exercises. The conversion chart gives consistent estimates under one stated set of assumptions, so you can compare formats fairly. Use the result as a budget for a first layout, and adjust after checking actual pages in your chosen font.

What is the KDP minimum page count?

For the paperback sizes listed here, black-ink and premium-color interiors start at 24 pages, while standard color starts at 72. Supported hardcover formats start at 75. Maximums vary by trim, paper and ink. These are print-format constraints rather than targets for useful content. Verify your exact combination against KDP’s official specifications, and count every page in the uploaded interior, not just pages with visible page numbers.

Does this page count calculator include pictures?

Yes, but its image model is deliberately simple: each image you enter occupies a separate full page. The optional blank-reverse setting adds a reverse behind each illustration, which is useful when planning a coloring book. It does not analyze image dimensions or automatically wrap text around illustrations. If story text sits on the same page as a picture, adding both a text allocation and an image allocation can overestimate the total; plan that book with a storyboard.

Can I convert character count to pages?

Choose the character-count option and include spaces in your count. The tool estimates English words using 6 characters per word, including spacing, before applying the same layout model. This is a rough alternative when your editor supplies characters but not words. It is not a reliable conversion for Chinese, Japanese, code, equations or unusually short labels. Use an actual word count for English prose whenever it is available, then validate with a sample layout.

Is the estimated spine ready for my final KDP cover?

No. Word count to pages is useful for planning, but a paperback cover needs the exact final page count from the exported interior PDF. Even a small change to front matter or chapter starts can alter that total. Use the estimate to compare formats and assess likely thickness, then return to the cover calculator after the interior is finished. Match its paper and ink selection to your publishing settings before downloading a final design guide.
