KDP cover size calculator

Count every PDF page, including blank pages. Odd totals are rounded up to an even number.

The cover always includes bleed. This checkbox changes the interior PDF size only. Cream paper is for black ink; choose a color option for a color picture book.

How to read your results

Finished trim and interior file size

Trim is the size of a single finished page after the printer cuts it. It is the size a reader holds, and the same size you choose in your KDP print settings. The interior PDF may be larger. With bleed, the document gains 0.125 in on its outside edge and twice that amount vertically, covering the top and bottom. The binding edge does not receive an extra strip. Without bleed, the document matches the trim. Keep these two measurements distinct when setting up your layout application; changing only the export setting will not make artwork extend into an empty bleed area.

Full-wrap cover and spine width

A full wrap is a single landscape file containing the back cover on the left, the spine in the middle and the front cover on the right. Its width depends on both the trim and the thickness of the interior. This KDP book cover calculator shows the combined dimensions so you can create a correctly sized canvas before adding artwork. The spine is calculated from all interior pages, including blank pages, using the chosen paper coefficient. If you add a dedication or extra activity pages later, recalculate the wrap. Resizing an old cover without checking the spine can shift the title away from the intended front panel.

Safe zones, bleed and the binding gutter

Bleed is expendable artwork outside the trim; a safe zone protects meaningful content inside it. Our cover guide recommends keeping important content 0.25 in inside each panel’s trim and fold lines. This is deliberately more conservative than KDP’s minimum of 0.25 in from the outside file edge, which already includes bleed. Neither measurement replaces the interior gutter. The gutter is the space beside the binding, and it grows as the book gets thicker. Keep faces, labels and coloring details away from that crease. Backgrounds may extend beyond a safe zone; titles and essential details should stay comfortably inside it.

Barcode reserve and export dimensions

The suggested barcode reserve is a 2 × 1.2 in rectangle near the lower-right corner of the back cover, clear of the spine and bottom trim. Avoid placing a character’s face, a blurb or important decoration there. The shaded rectangle in the downloaded guide is only a planning aid, not a barcode. Let KDP place its barcode or follow its requirements for your own. Preserve the file’s physical dimensions when importing the SVG: a browser screenshot is not a print template. Before exporting the final PDF, remove the guide layer and inspect both the full spread and a close view of the barcode area.

KDP cover size chart

This Amazon cover calculator chart uses cream paper and an interior with bleed. All wrap sizes include mandatory cover bleed. The full table covers each requested trim at every example page count; use the interactive tool when your paper or final page count differs.

Spine width formula

Spine width = final interior page count × paper coefficient. For black ink, white paper uses 0.002252 in per page; cream uses 0.0025 in per page. Color interiors use 0.002347 in per page. Full-wrap width equals two trim widths plus spine plus two bleed strips. Full-wrap height equals trim height plus two bleed strips.

  • 32-page color picture book: 32 × 0.002347 = 0.075104 in spine. At 8.5 × 8.5 in trim, the full wrap is 17.325104 × 8.75 in.
  • 120-page short novel: 120 × 0.0025 = 0.3 in spine. At 6 × 9 in trim, the full wrap is 12.55 × 9.25 in.
  • 24-page black-ink activity book: 24 × 0.002252 = 0.054048 in spine. At 8.5 × 11 in trim, the full wrap is 17.304048 × 11.25 in.

Interior gutter by page count

These are minimum binding margins. A comfortable reading layout may use more space. Select the band from the final page count, and check whether your application treats “inside margin” and “gutter” as separate controls before adding both.

Common cover size mistakes

  1. Using the wrong spine. A rough word-count estimate is not the final PDF page count. Finish the interior first, include blank reverses, and use the correct ink and paper option. A color cover does not mean a color interior.
  2. Removing cover bleed. White interior margins do not remove the paperback cover’s bleed requirement. Extend backgrounds into the bleed while keeping important cover text inside the safe area.
  3. Covering the barcode zone. Reserve clear space on the back cover before arranging the description and decorative details. Check the barcode location in Amazon’s final template, especially after any layout changes.
  4. Exporting a small image at print size. Aim for at least 300 DPI at the placed size. Multiplying inches by 300 gives the raster pixel dimensions; changing a DPI label alone does not add detail.

Use this KDP print cover calculator as a planning and template tool, then verify the actual PDF in Print Previewer. For the next step, estimate the interior with the book page count calculator, explore the AI picture book generator or AI coloring book generator, and prepare illustration assets with text to image illustrations.

Why does my cover size not match?

Compare the full wrap with the full wrap, not with the front panel. Recheck trim, final interior page count, paper and ink in both calculators. The interior bleed switch changes the interior document size; cover bleed is always included in this tool.

If the SVG changes size when imported into a design app, set the document to the displayed width and height in inches. Keep the guide on a separate layer, remove it before exporting the cover PDF, and compare the result with the official KDP template.

Frequently asked questions

How does this KDP cover size calculator work?

Choose your finished trim, the total number of interior PDF pages, and the actual paper and ink combination. The calculator multiplies the page count by the paper’s spine coefficient, adds both cover panels, and includes 0.125 in of cover bleed on every outside edge. It also shows the interior document size separately. Check the final dimensions against Amazon’s template after your manuscript is finished, because a revised page count changes the spine.

Can I download a KDP cover template?

Yes. The download button saves an SVG guide with a back panel, spine, front panel, safe zones and a suggested barcode reserve. Import it into a design application that preserves physical dimensions, and keep it on a separate guide layer. It contains no cover artwork and is not an upload-ready PDF. Remove every guide, label and placeholder before exporting the finished cover, then review it in KDP Print Previewer.

Does the KDP cover size calculator support color books?

Yes. Select premium color or standard color on white paper to use the color spine coefficient and the corresponding page limits. Do not leave the cream-paper default selected for a full-color picture book: cream is a black-ink option. The color of your cover does not determine the interior option. Almost every paperback can have a color cover; what matters for the spine is the paper and printing choice inside the book.

Why does my KDP cover template still have bleed when I turn it off?

The checkbox refers to the interior, which may have white margins or artwork extending to the trim. A paperback cover still needs bleed regardless of that choice. Turning the checkbox off therefore reduces the interior document dimensions, while the wrap dimensions remain unchanged. This separation is deliberate: removing cover bleed would create the wrong upload size. For an interior with even one full-bleed page, prepare the entire interior PDF with the correct bleed dimensions.

Should I count blank pages and the cover in my page total?

Count every page in the interior PDF, including title pages, copyright information and intentional blank reverses. Do not add the separate cover file. A page means one side of a sheet, not a sheet of paper or a two-page spread. KDP rounds an odd total up to an even number, and this tool follows that rule. Recheck the processed page count in your publishing account before committing to the final cover design.

Can I use these dimensions for a hardcover?

No. This tool produces paperback geometry. A case-laminate hardcover needs a different construction, including board allowance, hinge space and wrap areas, so adding a little extra width to a paperback file is not reliable. Choose hardcover in Amazon’s official cover calculator and download its template for the exact supported trim and page count. Our page count calculator lists hardcover minimums for planning, but its spine estimate is explicitly a paperback estimate.
